Review: Sea Circus Restaurant, Seminyak, Bali

With its dream-coloured glass louvre windows sitting pretty on Jalan Oberoi Sea Circus looks scrumptious from the outside alone. Inside, the white interior with vibrant turquoise accents and touches such as flowers in old bicarb of soda cans lends a carefree, beachfront feel, though the spot is off the beach and doesn’t have any ocean views.

The lack of views doesn’t really matter, as it turns out that prices at this relative newcomer to Jalan Oberoi are excellent for the quality of food on offer, though still a serious splurge for backpackers. The ambiance is very casual, stylish Bali (think designer kaftan ideally paired with large sunnies and a big leather tote bag), but it’s not snooty in a way some of the real beachfront places in this neck of the woods can be.
We visited Sea Circus for a girls’ night out last week and were thoroughly impressed. The Australian influence shows on the cocktail menu, which was apparently designed by Mark Ward of Hugo’s Sydney fame. We kicked off with a raspberry mojito and continued on sharing wine, which is at the lower end of the always pricey range in Bali. Bottles of Tabali reserva were 440,000 rupiah ++ a pop (10% tax, 5% service). Yes, I said always pricey, didn’t I? They have signature sharer cocktails served in milk bottle carafes meant for two to four people, coming in at 250,000 ++.
A plus for budget travellers splurging in Seminyak is that the food is designed to be shared, so you needn’t feel bad about asking for extra plates or swapping dishes around; you’re supposed to do that and it means you get a better chance to taste a range of dishes.
Among the dishes we tucked into were salt and pepper squid with sweet soy and coriander, beetroot salad with feta & toasted hazelnut (my favourite), bacon wrapped prawns with lemon whipped potato & sauce vierge, half shell scallops with cauliflower puree & pomegranate & lime dressing and vegetable tempura with ginger soy & chilli. The menu ranges in price from 20,000++ for shoe string fries with sweet chilli mayo to 140,000++ for aged sirloin with fries. Most are in the 55,000-65,000 range.
Service was attentive and friendly and the music was good. Recommended.
