BALI: NAUGHTY NURI’S WARUNG AND GRILL (BATUBELIG)
BBQ/ grilled food seems like a Balinese hidden talent. We have Jimbaran for one of the best grilled seafood and if you prefer your meat to seafood, Naughty Nuri’s Warung is the destination to go. Set up by a Westerner and his Indonesian wife, the original Naughty Nuri is located in Ubud and has since opened a more centrally located branch in Batubelig just a mile off Ku De Ta and Potato Head.
Nachos
Corn tortillas, refried beans, cheddar cheese, jalapenos, tomato salsa, sour cream & guacamole
Chicken Quesadillas
Flour tortilla, grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, guacamole, jalapenos, tomato salsa & sour cream
The menu is a well balanced mix of Western and Indonesian food; they only serve the best dishes out of the two. For starters, we ordered nachos and chicken quesadillas. I forgot to note down the prices of these two dishes but I would say they are in the range of IDR 30,000 to IDR 40,000. The nachos and chicken quesadilla have exactly the same dressing with the exception of additional chicken meat in the quesadillas. So it really comes down to whether you prefer fluffy flour tortilla or crispy corn tortilla if you have to choose between the two. Both are refreshing and authentic to the Mexican flavors.
Sausage IDR 30,000
Bratwurst or chorizo w/mashed potatoes or potato wedges
You get to choose what type of meat you would like for the sausage, either bratwurst orchorizo and a choice of mashed potato or potato wedges for the side. Since I was there with many people, we decided to try both versions. I prefer the chorizo as it is more flavorful with the slight spice. The bratwurst did not stand out as it tasted generic.
Spare Ribs BBQ IDR 85,000
The pork spare ribs here are undoubtedly the main attraction if you have not guessed from the numerous amount of pig memorabilia. The BBQ station is situated in front of the restaurant and faces the road for a reason—it gets really smoky. Thick white smoke envelops the meat to give it the smoky flavor on top of the sweet sauce. Looks can be deceiving, even though these are not baby back ribs, they are equally deliciously tender; it easily falls off the bone with just a gentle bite and it completely melts in your month.
Black Angus Rib Eye Steak IDR 135,000
The steak is grilled to perfection with little seasoning, just pepper and salt. They serve it with half a lime which is a nice Indonesian touch. The lime adds more flavor as the sourness subtract the bitterness from the chargrilled portion of the meat. The beef is tender with lots of fat which you can cut away, if you want to.
Nasi Goreng- Pak Wayan Special IDR 25,000
Fried rice w/chicken/pork, veggies, egg, krupuk
Since we get many Indonesian food in Surabaya and Jakarta, we only ordered one local dish, the nasi goring pak wayan special. It is really difficult to mess up such a classic Indonesian dish; the fried rice is flavorful and tasty with a choice of satay chicken or pork. While it wasn’t bad, it was not very special either.
The restaurant is appropriately called a warung which is typical open-aired dining restaurant. You can choose to sit in the house which is quite dark and has eccentric pig statues looming from the ceiling. I like to sit to the back of the premise which does not have a roof and you will be able to get more sunlight (better for food photography) and away from the dust from the cars as the warung is situated right by a major road. I would definitely come back for an affordable, casual lunch here.
